The Sathya Sai International Organisation of Australia & PNG’s is encouraging support for Earth Hour. An annual event originated in Australia in 2007 in which people, communities and businesses are encouraged to switch off their lights for an hour as a focus on environmental awareness issues.
Earth Hour, organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), commenced in Sydney 2007 and has since become a global environmental event. The organisers encourage people to turn off non-essential electric lights for an hour from 8.30 pm local time, as a commitment to the planet.
The WWF is encouraging a more pro-active role in addressing issues such as Climate Change. More details are available on their website. The SSIO encourages its members to be very aware of waste and the need for reduced energy consumption, recycling and care for our Mother Earth. Its programs through Envirocare are a recognition of a need for environmental responsibility and resource conservation. Apart from encouraging individual members to participate in the event, some regions around Australia will be conducting their own group observances and flyers may be available for these.
