The 23rd of November is the anniversary of the birth of Sathya Sai Baba, founder of the Sathya Sai International Organisation. Worldwide units of the SSIO will be commemorating this event and celebrating this great world spiritual teacher and inspirer of countless humanitarian service projects.
‘A life without love is meaningless. The more you love, the more it grows. True love should be distinguished from attachment either to persons or things. Attachment is based on selfishness. Love is based on selflessness. Love is the fruit which is born from the flower of your good deeds. Only when we engage ourselves in selfless service can we experience the essence of this pure love. – Sathya Sai Baba, Dec 11, 1985
Sathya Sai Baba was born on 23rd November 1926. His inspirational life was devoted to teaching humanity its fundamental relationship with God, the obligation to serve our fellow man especially those in need and value and respect our Mother Earth. He also taught the need to cultivate the intrinsic qualities that define us as human; the values of Peace, Truth, Non-violence, Right Conduct and especially Love. He led a life of continuous selfless service which saw amazing projects completed in the country of his birth. These, amongst many others, included such standout projects as construction and provision of several hospitals and other health facilities, including two super-specialty hospital. His commitment to education incorporating character-building as well as academic excellence saw the provision of top educational institutions from primary through to university level. He also constructed mammoth water supply projects providing potable water to millions of villagers and town/city dwellers. All of these projects and continuing services are provided free of fees to the recipients.
His inspiration has led the units of his organisations to carry out their own many service projects within the societies in which they live. Service is just one aspect of his influence. Particularly important is the way in which his teachings and example have led to the personal transformation of the individuals who have felt his influence and been inspired by what he has had to say. His followers are encouraged to cultivate unconditional love to all and to foster those other values that draw on love as their basis. They are exhorted to become exemplary citizens. The SSIO is a spiritual organisation, not a religious one and its members are encouraged to explore their own religions and become better adherents to the teachings of the masters that have been the foundations of them, as well as being tolerant and understanding of those practicing other faiths, seeking unity rather than division.
