Guru Poornima is an important date in the Hindu, Jain and Buddhist calendar as it is the date in which the Guru, the spiritual guide and teacher is remembered with love and gratitude. The guru is the one who, through their own direct experience may teach and lead a spiritual aspirant along the path to right living and enlightenment. Buddhists usually offer the day to the Lord Buddha, Hindus may offer it to their personal spiritual guide and/or the legendary guru Vyasa, traditionally attributed to be the writer of many of the great works on Hindu spirituality. Members of the Sathya Sai organisations honour Sathya Sai Baba on this day for the love, guidance and wisdom He has given them.
The true Guru plays an important role in the life of spiritual aspirants providing teachings and guidance appropriate to the individual. The aspirant, by following the teachings is able to shape their life in such a way that spiritual growth and understanding follows. Sai Baba says,
‘The Guru’s role is to lead the disciple on the Godward path. He must teach the disciple the true purpose for which each of his sense organs is to be used – his eyes, his tongue, and his limbs. All the senses are to be used for discovering and experiencing the Divine.- Sathya Sai Speaks. Vol 17.14.
Whilst the guru may take an outward form, Sai Baba teaches that the true guru leads us to find the guru within, God.
‘The best teacher is one’s own heart. Time is the best preceptor and awakener; the world is the best scripture; God is the best friend for man. So there is no need to wander in search of a Guru (Preceptor). Learn lessons from every living being, everything that you find around you. … Revere the Universe as your Guru. – Sathya Sai Baba, Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol. 15.15
