The SSSIO of Australia & PNG has been actively supporting the national community Clean Up Australia drive for many years. The event this year was held on Sunday, 3 March and members from groups around Australia were out doing their bit to improve our environment.
For example, in Wembley WA, 11 adults and 9 children joined others in the community to clean up a local park. In NSW, 15 members and 15 children were also involved in a parkland clean up in Telopea collecting 30 bags of rubbish. In Queensland, 40 parents and Sathya Sai Education children collected several bags of litter in Victoria Park, whilst a separate group of adults and Young Adults patrolled streets in Fortitude Valley collecting discarded rubbish.
One of the important features of the groups’ involvement has been to use the occasion to teach the participating children the important lessons of care and respect for the environment. The children both assist in the clean-up, as well as having fun learning activities that expand and reinforce their understanding of environmental awareness and the need for proactive involvement in looking after this planet we call home. It is heartening to witness the positive effect these lessons have on the children.
