The Sri Sathya Sai Centre of Melbourne, the first established in Victoria, last year celebrated its 40th anniversary. In keeping with the teachings of the founder of the SSSIO, one of its important activities has been service to the community, particularly those in need. For over 25 years one of those important service projects has been feeding the needy at the Queen Victoria Market.
Sri Sathya Sai Baba taught that feeding those in need and distress is one of the highest forms of devotion to God with enormous spiritual benefits when practiced with love and selflessness. This is in keeping with the teachings of Christ and all the great religions. Selfless service builds love and connection benefiting the recipient as well as the one providing the service. Melbourne Centre every second week on Thursdays provides meals for the needy at the Queen Victoria Market situated in Melbourne’s central business district.
The service activity includes preparing and serving meals by a group of dedicated members to about 25-30 people who come to the venue with a lot of hope and anticipation. The meals include pizza, veggie burgers, rice and curry, pasta, bread rolls, tea and coffee. During major festivals such as Christmas, festive food, drinks and gifts are shared as well.
People coming to the meal service get together for many reasons; socialising, making friends and just for basic human connection. They come from diverse backgrounds and cultures, and here they all find acceptance and connect in a common thread. The needs of the people are a primary consideration and in return, they express immense satisfaction and gratitude for the care and love shown to them. The members are grateful for the opportunity provide this service and share their love for their fellow travellers.
