Queensland Region of the SSSIO held an event on 8 March celebrating International Women’s Day, an international annual event to celebrate, recognise and acknowledge the achievements of women. The underlying purpose of the event was to empower and uplift women through love, wisdom and service with the rationale that when women support women with love, incredible things happen!
The event had 3 components:
1. GUEST SPEAKER – FAREEDA AMIR from Sydney – Aunty Fareeda is very well known in the Sai circle as not only an amazing motivational speaker but also an inspirational human being especially for women! We were privileged to have her attend the event & be the guest speaker.
Her speech was simply amazing in the way she linked the purpose of International Women’s Day on a global scale with Swami’s teachings, the historical timeline of women’s achievements and progress dating back to the suffragette movement in the late 1800s and her own personal journey growing up in a family home in Pakistan where universal brotherhood and respect of all religions were valued & practised.
2. PANEL DISCUSSION – with local Sai sisters – young and experienced on the practical application of Swami’s teachings especially for women! The idea here being Swami’s teachings are relevant to everyone at all stages in our lives!
Some of the highlights of the session were discussions around:
Is it really a privilege to be born as a woman?
Remember that when you react angrily towards your mother-in-law, there will come a time when you will have daughters-in-law!
Swami’s quote where he says a good wife is of value only to her husband whereas a good mother is a national asset!
3. SERVICE ACTIVITY – Card making and Gift packing for women fleeing domestic violence in Brisbane. The service was in support of a local NGO in Brisbane – Micah Projects who provide comprehensive support and advocacy for individuals and families experiencing homelessness, poverty, domestic violence, and social isolation.
108 bags were packed with handmade cards and shampoos, conditioners, deodorants, sanitary pads, soaps, toothbrushes, toothpastes, moisturising lotions, hair brushes & perfumes in each bag!
Attendance at the event was excellent with 60 participants including 10 young adults and 10 SSE children.
