Members of the SSSIO’s NSW Region recently came together for a wonderful day of fellowship, learning and spiritual exploration at Nan Tien Temple in Berkeley, Wollongong. With 37 members of all ages attending, the visit provided a meaningful opportunity to experience another spiritual tradition while enjoying time together as a family.

Our day began with a refreshing Tai Chi session in the tranquil surroundings of the temple. The rain had been falling earlier, but, almost as if the weather had made way especially for us, it paused just as our session began. Everyone was able to enjoy the gentle, meditative movements in the peaceful temple setting.

We then joined a guided tour of the temple and its two main shrines, learning about the history, traditions and practices of Nan Tien and the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Order. Nan Tien, meaning “Paradise of the South,” was established in the 1990s and officially opened in 1995. Today, it is recognised as the largest Buddhist temple in the Southern Hemisphere, serving as a centre for Buddhist practice, education, culture and community.

An especially interesting aspect of our visit was learning about the female monastic community and the dedication of the nuns who serve, teach and maintain the temple. Their commitment provided an inspiring example of discipline, service and spiritual practice.

Following the tour, everyone enjoyed a wholesome vegetarian lunch, providing a relaxed opportunity for members of all ages to connect, share conversations and enjoy each other’s company.

The afternoon continued with a Dhamma talk by a Venerable of Nan Tien Temple, held in the temple’s beautiful conference room. The serene setting created a wonderful atmosphere for reflection and learning. The talk offered valuable insights into spiritual living and the importance of cultivating peace, compassion and wisdom in our daily lives.

The visit was a beautiful opportunity to come together across generations, learn about another spiritual tradition and appreciate the universal values that connect us all. The day reflected the spirit of love, peace, compassion, service and harmony, while strengthening the bonds of friendship.
