Beanie Making Service for those in Need – a Guru Poornima Offering
The ladies of Queensland Region’s Woolloongabba Centre had been hoping to find another opportunity to come together in service to the community, and, as always, our prayers were heard. One of our newer members mentioned that she wove beanies, while one of our long-time members suggested asking Sister Sue to teach us. It felt as though we had been lovingly provided exactly the opportunity we had been seeking.
Throughout May, we had 13 adults, 2 young adults and 3 children from the Sai Spiritual Education Program gather for our first weaving workshop, where Sister Sue patiently taught us how to make the beanies. We then continued weaving from home while listening to devotional music or reciting sacred chants with the intention of infusing every stitch with love. A second workshop helped us build our skills and expand our repertoire.
During the winter months, approximately 60 beanies were distributed to those experiencing homelessness through our monthly food service. The service was completed as an offering at the celebration of Guru Poornima, an event to honour our spiritual teacher and guide.
Our final collection of beanies was donated to the Mater Mother’s Hospital and the Women’s House Shelta – for women and children escaping domestic violence. They were deeply grateful that we had thought of them.
The ladies that joined this service experienced the weaving circles as a beautiful source of friendship, joy, and connection, all while working towards a mutual cause.
